My summers were spent in Lynchburg, Virginia with my late grandmother Phyllis Jones. While visiting, I would learn the latest rap songs and dance moves to bring back to my home on the army base. At night the whole block would congregate in the parking lot of the Shalom Apartments, blasting Hip Hop music. My older cousins would make sure I was introduced to pioneering Hip Hop artists and exposed to liberated black thought. Employing their gifts of rapping and storytelling, those artists used the microphone to share many facets of black life. Through repetitive, catchy, rhythmic sequences Hip Hop has been used to express Black joy and pain. “7 Lessons Hip Hop Taught Me That School Didn’t” is a multifaceted book; one part autobiography and one part Hip-Hop history. As a lover of Hip-Hop culture, the message I embedded in this book encourages you to know more about the music you enjoy, the culture you identify with and how it was all created.
